I recently was inspired to read more in my life. I read a decent amount usually between books, online articles, etc but my reading list has increased dramatically just in the past few weeks. I have read many books of various types. I always love to learn and gain more knowledge. My biggest surprise in reading so far was, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It was a beautiful story but also carried tremendous amounts of wisdom. I have to say it was the best book I’ve read in my life thus far. It’s a pretty easy read and I recommend it to everyone!
The other book I read that I enjoyed was The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. I didn’t realize until I started reading it, that this novel was made into a movie just recently. I thought it was an intriguing read and really liked the authors ability to be so witty and conversational. I will probably more of this author as well.
My parents have left Seattle where I have grown up my whole life. They have relocated in the Pearl District of Downtown Portland and last week I went and visited their new place. They got a beautiful condo on the 15th floor at The Louisa building. They have the best location right across from Whole Foods which I love, they are close to the Nordstrom and other downtown shopping and there is even a LuLu Lemon in their building! I was so excited to visit all the great restaurants and there are some amazing places to eat that you just have to be in a city to experience. I just fell in love with this location and enjoyed the area so much more than I thought I would. I love the vibe there, people are healthy, active and for the environment! Most places we ate serve all organic ingredients, some of the yoga studios also have little healthy cafes and there are always people bike riding or running with their dogs. It’s me kind of place. Everyone uses their recycled totes for shopping and the stores won’t even send you home with a plastic bag! It’s great! So here are some fun pictures from my trip. I visited some fun places! We ate at some great places such as Henry’s, Jake’s, BlueHour, Pine Street, Over & Shakers, Zues Cafe, and many more with no bad meals at all! I can’t wait to go back and visit more Art Galleries too! Portland is a great area and I’m looking forward to exploring more next time I’m back in August for my Dad’s 50th birthday!

Happy Thanksgiving! I get so excited when Thanksgiving arrives, it kicks off the best part of the year. The holidays are all about family and friends and giving to others. We have so many traditions in our family and I love when every one is a part of it. We do a big Thanksgiving dinner at our house with all of our family and my mom makes the biggest most amazing turkey. This year we had my niece and nephew, my brothers girlfriends three daughters (1, 2 and 4) and my cousins 4 month old baby girl and 2 year old boy. It was definitely a crazy day with the little ones running around. Then the day after Thanksgiving we put our tree up and spend the weekend doing the Christmas decorations. Our family is really big on Christmas music too. So we are busy decorating listening to holiday music. All our cars are tuned into the Christmas station and we play our Christmas CD’s at home as well. I love it!

I had the pleasure of visiting Georgetown in DC this weekend and it was amazing. I was touring DC and decided to spend an entire day in Georgetown. I loved it! I don’t know if any of you have been there but how cool is this little area. “M” street was loaded with some of my favorite shops! Going in Lululemon was very dangerous this trip! But I had to, those are some of the best workout and yoga clothes on the planet. So after a full day of shopping I conveniently ended right at Georgetown Cupcake. You have all heard of DC Cupcakes on TLC right? This is definitely one of those famous “see it on t.v. places”. I am shocked it’s the end of October! This year has flown and we are now right around the corner from the holidays! I can’t wait! I have already started baking and looking for decorations!! Baking is my thing come October all the way through January! I seriously baked for 6 hours non stop yesterday. I made a lot of Halloween treats all from scratch including; vanilla cupcakes, chocolate cupcakes, sugar cookies and my new favorite pumpkin spice cookies with cinnamon icing! The cinnamon icing recipe came from magnolia bakery in NYC. Amazing desserts there if you’ve never been. The pumpkin spice cookies I made as healthy as I could, and really the icing is the only not so healthy part but I only iced a few. I used all natural and organic ingredients and substituted organic applesauce instead of the oil. Here’s the recipe if you want to try it now that it’s the pumpkin season!
1 1/2 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 Teaspoon Baking Soda
1/2 Teaspoon Baking Powder
1/2 Teaspoon Cinnamon (I used a pinch more)
1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg (Also used a pinch more)
1/4 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Cup Sugar
1 Can Pumpkin
2 Tablespoons Canola Oil (I used Applesauce)
1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla
Drop spoonfuls on sprayed cookie sheet. Bake on 350 for about 15-18 minutes. (Makes 18-24 cookies)
If there is one thing I could leave you with, give you, force you to take, force you to watch, it would be “FOOD MATTERS”. I’m admitting that I am begging everyone to watch this. It is so educational and enlightening and I believe everyone should see it. Since I bought this last year, I have watched it at least 5 times. It’s a great refresher and is a great reminder why you want to eat healthy and put your health above all. I think I could write pages and pages about this documentary. To sum it up, it is easily one of the most powerful, influential and fascinating pieces I’ve ever watched. I wish schools could show this! I wish more people knew about it! I am trying my best to share it with the world.. But I need your help. Please watch this, buy the movie or if you’ve seen it, forward it along to someone who you think should watch it. Nothing that I explain or blog about could express what’s really in this film, you just have to see it for yourself.

Let me break this down.
Heart disease and Cancer are the top two killers in the US and they are at an all time high.
Heart disease – 652,486 deaths and Cancer 553,888 deaths
39,000 people die due to unnecessary surgery and other errors in hospitals
80,000 people die due to other infections in hospitals
106,000 people die due to adverse drug reactions in hospitals
225,000 people die due to modern medicine
Everyone in every country, every culture, and every language knows – You Are What You Eat.
Let’s say Jane walks into her local grocery store and she picks out some fruit and vegetables from the produce department. Even when she tries to eat with what she’s been told is the healthy choice (fruits and vegetables) she actually is getting the complete opposite. That food that she just picked out has traveled anywhere from 5,000-15,000 miles before it got there, and it’s at least a week old. Not to mention the fact that they are covered in pesticides and other chemicals. So even though she thought she was eating a vegetarian commercial food diet, she in fact is eating old, toxic food. Now the fruit and vegetables have already lost some of their value because they aren’t fresh anymore and when she got home she steamed her vegetables and instantly lost even more value. Studies show when you steam, fry, grill, cook, heat food in any way, it loses enzymes. Jane only got about 30-40% value from her foods. (Not to mention what these chemicals are doing to the soil, the water, and the air.
In the film, it explains how your immune system digests cooked foods. If you eat more than 51% cooked foods, your immune system goes into a state of being invaded, it thinks it’s being taken over by a foreign substance because it recognizes the food as toxic – and is activated on a false alarm. You’ll find out more about this and why this is so bad, in the film.
Essentially the United States is suffering from Chronic Mal-Nutrition. David Wolfe talks about what we need, what our bodies are meant to survive and stay strong with that will keep us healthy, prevent getting sick and make us live long lives. Things like Spirulina – the highest protein content food in the world. 50% of protein in ANY food is destroyed when cooked. So putting some Spirulina in a glass of water vs eating a big steak is monumental for your body and what it responds to. Eating a steak is so hard on your digestive system and takes a ton of energy to break down and you aren’t receiving anywhere near the amounts of protein in Spirulina. The same goes for Cacao beans (chocolate) – the highest natural source of magnesium and chromium, one of the highest in zinc, manganese, and vitamin C. It’s one of the highest anti-oxidant content foods in the world. But not in processed chocolate like you Hershey’s you buy at the store, that has none of these because it’s all been heated. And anti-oxidants protect us from DNA damage, viral damage, cancer and skin damage.
Now what has happened, is our values have changed. A lot of people say, “I don’t have time to cook dinner at home” or “Buying organic is too expensive” and yet they drive a nice car or got a new car. We would rather pay for rent than the best food ever. People would rather spend money on a house or a car than feed their children the best super foods found in the world. We all should be investing in our families health instead. That should be the first priority. Instead, health suffers and we have more and higher medical and insurance bills than ever.
The one thing that doesn’t get enough importance and there is often a misconception about is vitamins. We didn’t use to have them and now they are readily available and over the counter for anyone. We’ve all heard stories about how Vitamin C can cause kidney stones, that this vitamin and that can cause X. But nutritionists have read the medical literature and not case exists of Vitamin C causing a kidney stone. There is this myth about vitamins and overdosing and causing problems. But there’s no scientific research for this. It’s simply not true. But, there is however research and studies that show that high enough amounts of Vitamin C and other vitamins can prevent illness and treat illnesses. BUT, is there money in that? Will that keep the pharmaceutical companies in big business? Will that keep most doctors making big money?
Then the film goes into a Doctor vs a Nutritionist. And it’s really all very interesting. I encourage you to watch it as soon as you possibly can and let me know what you think! You won’t regret it! “Let thy food, be thy medicine” -Hippocrates (460-370 B.C)

Whew! This has been a crazy few weeks for me! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend, one of the last few sunny ones for a lot of you. I can’t believe we are into fall now. I am sitting here thinking about all the travel I have just been through and that I’ll only be home for a day and I’m off again. We just got home from another one night trip to New Orleans (just was there last weekend!) and we are leaving again in a day for Salt Lake and then on to Vegas. I may be going to Seattle from there and then finally back home. It’s hard to keep it all straight. We had a fun time with friends in New Orleans! We took a short trip just like last year to see a home Saints game. And if you’ve never been to a Saints game? It’s an experience to say the least. They are some loud hard core fans! Of course they won which is great. And so did my Jets, so it was a great football Sunday! I did have to wear a Saints shirt to show support for their team but I am all about the JETS! So don’t hold it against me that I was wearing a Saints shirt! Now, I will do laundry and repack tonight while I watch Monday night football! St. Louis @ New York Giants! Who did you take? I’m rooting for New York!
I was just in New Orleans last weekend for a fun girls trip! I have only been a few times but for the first time I got to have a fun mini trip for just us girls. We went to the Katy Perry concert and she was awesome live! Great entertainer and killer voice. We kept feeling like we were in the middle of a candy land game. It was pretty cool. We stayed at the W which was very nice there, and had a great breakfast there before we went out shopping. There are some cute little boutique stores there so we got some fun things. But my most favorite thing I brought home was this New Orleans art.
You should also check out abstract art by Brittain Morrison. She is an incredible new artist and she has created some amazing works of art. This is one that she made, the picture doesn’t do it enough justice compared to seeing it in person but still amazing.
We also have a Peter Lik and another on the way. Most of you have probably heard of him. Famous photographer that has galleries all over as well as a show on the weather channel. His work is so beautiful.
And this newest piece up above is from New Orleans, which makes it our second from that area. Both are jazz types scenes and they are full of vibrant colors!
This canvas was painted by a local artist in New Orleans and I have to say there are some extremely talented and creative artists there. Just walking around the French Quarter, you see it everywhere. Their spirit is still alive and loud in Nola! Supporting your local artists is so important! I’m glad we have been able to do that. I can’t wait to get more!
So now that I have this new found love of art, I’m constantly looking for more. And I definitely can appreciate it all. What type of art do you have? I curious to know what else am I missing out there?
Hi everyone! I hope you are all taking advantage of summer and did something fun this weekend! I had a super fun filled weekend. I flew into Seattle late Friday night to attend one of my best friends wedding. It was nothing short of spectacular and was truly an amazing night. I could not be happier for the beautiful couple. It was an outside wedding which I know, is brave for the northwest but the weather pulled through and it was a gorgeous warm sunny day. Overall, huge success! And then on Sunday I went to Seafair, a massive festival we have every summer here in Seattle. I think this year was the 60th year of their annual celebration. If you ever come to Seattle in the summer and you’re not from here, definitely something you should experience. There’s so much going on; parades, Miss Seafair, Navy and Coast Guard, the blue angles flying, hydroplane races and marathons. It’s absolutely crazy! Once again, the weather held up and it turned out to be a beautiful weekend!
Anyway, I am working away and wanted to drop a line on what’s going on……….
Unfortunately, Rock A Healthy Body isn’t finished yet. I anticipated to have launched it by now but we are going to have to wait just another week. We are getting there and we are so close! I am so excited to have it finished soon so I can share it with you. It is looking so great!
I also had the privilege of being able to do an extra shoot in Jacksonville this past week for the new web site. It was so much fun! We had a great time! It will look fabulous! I had an amazing hair stylist that’s worked for Paul Mitchell for 20 years and she’s traveled the world teaching others, pretty impressive, best of all she is a super sweet lady! Thanks for all your help Hope! Also, had a great photographer to thank, Greg! He has a great talent that I’m so happy to have been a part of, twice now! So with this, we are one step closer to launching our site! Look forward to seeing you there then!

I wasn’t sure when the right time would be to let it out but I just couldn’t wait any longer. I just have to let you in on a little secret I’ve been working on. I have a new website in the works right now that I know you will want to be a part of. It’s completely devoted to sharing knowledge and tips on health, fitness and nutrition. We will have a very interactive community that I would love for everyone to be a part of! The last few years I really have taken an interest in fitness, nutrition and health, and that has turned into pure passion. I’ve read book after book (still working on mine), taken certified nutrition courses, put my body through many workouts and have found not only what works for me but also what I needed in order to reach optimal health. Which is more than just eating some fruit and getting on the treadmill. It really is an entire way of life, living in a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Don’t you want that? A life without illness, injury, pain or anything that makes us weak? To be strong in body, mind and spirit? Because really we have the power and the opportunity to create a better quality of life for ourselves. I’m really just inspired to share with others and have others share their stories and thoughts with me. So hopefully in about a week or less I will be launching this new site and we can all be learning everyday. ROCK A HEALTHY BODY. I hope to see you there! 😉
